The Devout Atheist

THE DEVOUT ATHEIST

In order to understand what an atheist is, and how he thinks, we first have to define what a “theist” is and how he thinks. Just as it is impossible to describe asymmetrical without a working concept of symmetry, an atheist is simply someone who is “against theists”.

I would define a “theist” as a person who devotes years of their life to studying original texts from one or more religions, and learns ancient languages and history to help them become an “expert” in the field, perhaps earning a degree in Divinity from some college or university, and going on to years of research so that they can publish a thesis that indicates that the burial shroud of Jesus was actually recovered on the fifth day by Mary Magdalene's step-sister Berta, who tore it into diapers for a family from India, two of which are presently on display at a Hindu Temple in Calcutta.

Obviously, by this definition I am a devout A-Theist, and I think that the Church has missed the boat. We should set aside one week-end every month to join with our Atheist brothers in celebrating reason and common sense.

That being said, Atheism itself is just one more religion like all the others, based on what the followers deem to be false, without offering any conclusive proof that God does NOT exist. Also their belief in absolute randomness simply does not mesh with the Universe that I live in.
